Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 63 lbs

I just noticed they one of my dogs nails is cracked straight thru. Would should I do? It doesn't seem to bother him or hurt him. In time will he loose the nail?

If the nail isn't hanging off (meaning likely to catch on something) then I would leave it alone. It will fall off eventually. Monitor daily for any swelling of the toe itself because that would be a sign of an infection. If the nail is getting caught on things like a rug, I would recommend having it cut off. If this happens and it starts to bleed, pack the nail with something powdered, like flour or corn starch, and the bleeding will stop. Good luck and kisses to Kaiser!
