My dog is panting, gassy, clingy, and acting strange. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 23 lbs

This morning my dog (who loves to eat) wouldn't eat breakfast and instead drank a lot of water. I took him on a walk and he seemed fine, when we got back he ate but now he is panting a lot, very clingly, gassy and acting strange. I'm just worried and I don't know what to do or who to call -we couldn't get him into the vet today even though we called. I'm trying to keep him comfortable and hydrated but what else should I do?

I would continue to keep a close eye on Dasher. Make sure he has plenty of fresh water to drink. You can take his rectal temperature - normal is 100-102.5. If he has a fever or elevated temperature and is still acting abnormally, you may want to take him to an emergency veterinarian. If his temperature is normal, I would watch him for 24 hours. If he is still exhibiting signs of stress (acting strange, passing a lot of gas, varying appetite) tomorrow, or starts vomiting or having diarrhea, he should be evaluated by a veterinarian.
