My new puppy is itching, biting, licking. Is it allergies or dry skin?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 70 lbs

My new puppy is itching a lot. I believe it to be allergies. He doesn't at night or in the kennel but when laying around by himself I see him constantly biting and licking all over. He does not have flees. So it's probably either dry skin or allergies right?

I agree with you, this could be allergies though with him being a puppy, other infectious causes such mange are also possible. I would recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian to make sure it is not something like that that needs to be treated. Also, if he has been biting and licking at it there is a good possibility that there is a secondary infection that would be beneficial to treat as that is usually a big component causing the itch.

If your dog is already in a good flea control then the itch is probably caused by allergies or a skin mite called demodex. The allergies can be from a protein in his food or to something in the environment, like grasses, pollens, dust, etc. The allergies cause a breakdown in the skin barrier and make the dog very itchy. The excessive itching and licking cause the skin infection. I would recommend taking Murphy in to see the vet so he can be started on some antibiotics to help clear up the skin and get on a good flea control. You may also ask about a medicated shampoo, these can help clear up the skin more quickly. I would also recommend discussing with your vet some options for medication to help control the allergy symptoms like Atopica, Apoquel, or Cytopoint. Good luck!
