Found a worm in my puppy's poop. OTC dewormer or vet visit needed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 7 days old

My puppy went to poop last night and I ended up pulling a long and thick what I believe to be a worm out of her. I was seeing if I should give her over the counter mess or if she need to be seen by a professional.

I would recommend a trip to the veterinarian to young Maisey. The vet will be able to identify exactly what types of wom infestation she has using a fecal sample. Then the appropriate wormer can be prescribed. Best of luck to you both.

I would recommend a prescription dewormer based on the type of parasite it is. I would take a stool sample in to her regular veterinarian to be tested and they can prescribe the appropriate medication based on the worm (or worms) type. Good luck!

Hello! Thank you for posting your question! In regards to purchasing a dewormer over the counter, many of these are unreliable. I would try to collect a stool sample from your dog and schedule an appointment with your veterinarian to have an exam performed and to have your vet look at the stool to try and diagnose what type of worm it could be in order to prescribe the most appropriate dewormer to treat this effectively. Hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please feel free to contact me with any other questions or concerns you may have
