My cat has dry skin and dandruff. Can I use lotion or moisturizer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Siamese | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 11 lbs

My cat, Daario, has some pretty dry skin on his back. In the patches where he has this dry skin he has what looks like dandruff. Am I able to use lotion or a gentle moisturizer to maybe help him feel better?

Often scaling of the skin is more to do with what is going on in the inside. You could try the moisturiser but I fear it may make his skin very greasy. What I would suggest would be getting a special shampoo or mousse from the vet for scaly skin and try applying it. Some of the mousses can be used on a dry coat so no need to worry if you cant bathe him. I would also suggest getting a skin supplrment for Daario, your bet should have some or any food pet shop. If this doesn't start to improve his skin I would have him examined by a dermatologist in case he has an underlying skin issue.

I don't recommend using lotion as he may just lick it off. You could bathe him with a moisturizing shampoo for cats and see if that helps. You could also try something like Free Form Snip Tips for cats which is an Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil to support healthy skin and coat. If the condition persists then he should be examined by a vet to make sure he doesn't have mites, allergic dermatitis, skin infection, or a flea allergy.
