What causes my dog's heat rashes in hot spots and how to prevent?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 3 years and 2 months old

My dog keeps on getting heat rashes in their hot spots. Is there anyway to prevent this? It's not from fleas and the vet wasn't able to tell us why she is getting them.

She could have food or outdoor allergies. I would consider putting her on a daily allergy medicine to see if this helps. You can try 1/2 tablet of an adult 25mg Benadryl twice a day. If this doesn't help I would talk to your vet about starting her on apoquel which is a stronger allergy medicine that is safe for long term use. I hope this helps!
