Cat bladder issues: Is it an emergency vet visit or can I wait?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

Hi. My cat has a bladder issue and I'm worried I need to take him to an emergency vet. He's had bladder crystals in the past and had surgery. He just started walking funny and cleaning himself a lot a couple hours ago, but he was fine earlier today. Can I wait until my normal clinic opens at 8am or should I take him tonight? Thank you for your help

It sounds like he may be in the early stages of a urinary blockage. Watch him carefully overnight, if he steps into the litter box but nothing comes out, if he appears to be straining, or if he cries out, he may need to go to the emergency vet overnight. Otherwise he can probably wait until 8am.
