My dog ate a sock and is sick. Could it be an intestinal blockage?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 70 lbs

I think my dog ate a sock a few days ago, he ate one before and passed it but this time no success on passing whatever it is. He hasn't ate in 3 days and barely drinks water, he's losing weight and I don't know what to do. Can you give me some advice on what to do?

Buddy needs to get to a veterinarian ASAP. If he ate a sock and it's not passing, then this may be a surgical emergency. An intestinal blockage can be fatal if untreated. Please take Buddy to a vet asap for an evaulation and possible diagnostics.

You really need to be worried. I would bet anything he has an intestinal obstruction from a sock or something else he ate. You need to get him to a vet immediately. This is not something you can fix at home. This is an emergency.

The big concern when pets eat socks (or any inedible object for that matter), is that it can cause a blockage of the intestines which generally requires surgery to remove the sock. Without quick and appropriate treatment, the condition can be fatal. Here is an article about intestinal (also called bowel) obstruction: https://www.petcoach.co/article/7-things-you-should-know-about-foreign-bodies-in-dogs/ Especially for Charlie, since he has a history of this behavior, he should always see the veterinarian any time he exhibits vomiting, not eating well or becoming lethargic. Definitely avoid him gaining access to socks or other such objects. Best of luck.
