Why is my cat suddenly hiding, scared, and avoiding her litter box?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 9 lbs

My cat recently started hiding from us and getting scared and running under a bed, and she didn't use to do this. She also hasn't been using the cat litter box anymore so I put her in a room with all of her toys food water bed and litter. Why do you think this is happening all of a sudden?

When cats begin acting abnormally, there can either be a medical or behavioral cause. I would recommend having Kia evaluated by her regular veterinarian to see if there is an underlying medical issue contributing to her behavior (pain, illness, etc.). If there is no found medical cause, then a discussion with her veterinarian about what steps can be taken for behavioral modification would be warranted.

Often cats hide when they are sick. I suggest you first rule out that she does not have an underlying medical issue by taking her to your vet for an exam. I also suggest you get some Feliway diffusers for your house as they often help to de-stress cats.
