My dog swallowed a bee. Is it dangerous and what should I do next?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8 years and 8 months old | 12.5 lbs

I think my 13 lb. dog swallowed a live bee about 15 minutes ago while on our walk. I tried to swat it off his lip/mouth area and then it was gone while we were both struggling. He was making his scared whinny sounds too while I swatted at it. What should I do? Is there a remedy I can give him so the bee is dead while inside of him?

I would not be worried about the actual ingestion of the bee. Eating it will not hurt him. If he is whining he may have been stung inside his mouth during the struggle. You can give some liquid children's Benadryl - one teaspoon tonight and one teaspoon tomorrow morning. If he stills seems uncomfortable tomorrow afternoon he should be seen by your vet. I hope this helps!

If Winnie did swallow a bee the acid in his stomach will kill it. The most concerning thing would be if the bee stung him on the way down and he had an allergic reaction to it. If he does have an allergic reaction you will notice hives/swelling especially around the face, vomiting and/or diarrhea, and trouble breathing. If you notice any of these signs you need to take Winnie to the vet right away.
