You can recognize dandruff by seeing in on the haircoat (white flaky specs). And you can help promote a healthy haircoat and skin by the following: 1) Feeding a high quality dog food (based on your pets age- puppy, adult, senior- Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Evo, Eukanuba, Wellness, etc), 2) Daily fish oils- add omega 3's and is a natural anti-inflammatory for skin, 3) Treat for any underlying diseases that affect the skin- a vet visit is needed to rule out underlying disorders such as allergic dermatitis, endocrine disorders (hypothyroidism or Cushing's disease), etc). Best wishes with your pet Research and his skin. Take care.

If you part the hair and look directly at the skin you should be able to see if there is dandruff/flakey skin. If it is severe enough you will be able to see the flakes on the surface of the hair. The best way to treat flakey skin is with a medicated shampoo. You can probably pick up a medicated shampoo from your local vet.
