My dog ate pot edibles and is sick. Can I help him without a vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Male | neutered | 20 lbs

My dog ate some pot cookies and pot gummy bears. He is a jack russel. He ate probably 3 cookies and 7 gummy bears. His motor skills are completely gone, his nose is warm, his twitching. I did get him to eat some cheese and I gave him some water through a syringe. What can I do? I really can't afford to take him to his vet right now. Is this something that will just have to play out?

Hi, fortunately marijuana ingestion is not usually fatal in dogs. It does depend on how much of the pot was in the food he ate. There is no way to tell how severe his symptoms will be. If you can't take him to a vet, I would put him in a cool room on a soft bed with a towel underneath as they can dribble urine when this happens. Marijuana ingestions usually takes a few hours, up to 12 hours, to get out of their systems. If you notice his breathing getting extremely slow and shallow he needs to see a vet. Most likely, this won't happen and there should be no long term ill effects. Good luck, I hope this helps!

    Marijuana poisoning can be severe if not treated promptly, and Jaxon should see a vet now for this to prevent any toxic symptoms from occurring. I would see if you can borrow money from family and friends, and I can give you some resources that may help you afford a vet. You can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants.     Jaxon absolutely needs to be seen by a veterinarian immediately. It sounds like he consumed quite a bit of marijuana based on his clinical signs. He needs to be on IV fluids, given medications to help with his symptoms, and monitored. There are things like Care Credit (www.carecredit.com) that you can look into as far as financing, but Jaxon needs to be seen immediately. The hospital may also have a good samaritan fund that they could help you with.
