How to protect my outdoor cat's nose from mosquito bites safely?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | 10 lbs

Hi, we live in St Petersburg, Fl and the mosquitoes are bad. My neighbor has a blk/wht male cat that is more outdoors than in. His nose is all red with sores from the Mosquitoes. Is there a spray, ointment or collar that is safe to keep the mosquitoes from biting poor kitties nose? I know several people with this major problem with their indoor\outdoor cats...Please let me know. Thank you, Colleen

Anything you apply to his nose will be licked off. This is not recommended. There are several feline friendly products, but be sure to NOT use products containing DEET or permethrins on your cat. It is always prudent to check with your veterinarian before using any product or medication on your pet. Mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk. Try to keep Onew inside during these times. Check your yard for standing water which serves as mosquito breeding grounds. Consider placing bat boxes or bat houses on your property to draw bats in. They eat large numbers of mosquitoes every night.
