My dog isn't eating, throwing up, and stomach growling. Vet or home care?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Female | spayed | 4 years and 8 months old | 85 lbs

My boxer (85 lb female) is not eating for a couple days, she threw up once yesterday and her stomach is growling. Would a stool softener and a walk help or should I take her to the vet?

Poor Molly! Because she hasn't eating for a couple of days, I would take her into the vet. She could be constipated, but she could also have a GI illness, a foreign body, pancreatitis, or may have eaten something rotten. When a dog refuses to eat for days, it's time to see the vet. The vet can do diagnose what is causing her symptoms, and can prescribe an appropriate treatment.

A stool softener is not likely to help, neither will a walk. It could be a gastrointestinal infection, a foreign body in the gastrointestinal tract or maybe a condition such as pancreatitis. I strongly recommend taking Molly to the vet as soon as possible in order to get treated.
