My dog threw up yellow liquid and won't drink. Is he poisoned?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 7 months old

My rhedesian ridgeback, has been off his food and water. This arvo took him to the vet because he threw up yellow liquid. Vet gave him a nausea shot and pills to settle his stomach. The dog looked better and drank water for himself for a couple of hours but now refuses water again. I gave him another capsule 30 mins ago and still no drinking. Could he be poisoned?

There are many reasons for vomiting, lethargy and reduced appetite/thirst and poisoning is one of the less common. Intestinal obstructions, viral infections and eating food/garbage which is spoiled is more common. As he has not responded to basic, initial treatment further investigations and possibly an abdominal xray may be recommended - a recheck by your vet is required. It may also be recommended to start intravenous fluids if he is not drinking enough to keep him hydrated.
