Dog ate plastic bag, seems fine. Will it pass? What to watch for?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rhodesian Ridgeback | Male | unneutered | 6 months and 30 days old

Rio ate a thin plastic bag at the park earlier today. He's a big dog (75 lbs). Will it pass through? Anything I should look out for? He seems totally fine.

In my experience, yes - it's likely that this will pass through with no problems, but there is always a chance that it may get stuck and cause an obstruction. Signs to watch for would be repeated episodes of vomiting, not eating, acting lethargic, and not having bowel movements. Problems would usually occur within 2-3 days, so if he's still acting normal by then chances are good that everything is fine. If you have any concerns, you can always take him to your vet for x-rays to check for a possible blockage.
