My cat's ear smells bad and has crusty buildup. Is it an infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Russian Blue | Female | unspayed | 10 months and 24 days old | 3 lbs

Hi, My Cat has a bad odor out of her ear. When I first rescued her I thought she had ear mites, no odor but I had cleaned out her ears as I did a previous cat. When I took her to the vet they said no ear mites or that I must have cleaned her ears well. So I left it alone but now months she has this horrible odor and crusty build up. Please help

It's probably an ear infection, often it cannot be seen from the outside. Ear infections are very common in cats, it is usually caused by either mites, yeast or bacterial disease. the treatment is usually simple and straightforward, you will have to take Shadow to the vet and get the ears checked, then a prescription ear drops will be prescribed according to the infectious agent.
