Why is my senior pit bull losing hair and getting dry skin patches?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Staffordshire Terrier | Female | spayed | 14 years and 2 months old | 55 lbs

I have a 14 year old female pit bull, fixed, who has developed dry skin patches over the last half year or so. The hair in the area falls out and what remains is dark patchy skin that comes off easily when brushed/pulled. Her hair is black and what's underneath is dark dry skin. She now has about 5-6 of these patches ranging in size all over her body mostly on back and sides

The lesions shown in the pictures are suggestive of a skin infection. Skin infections can occur secondary to allergies, mange or fleas. I would recommend that you have Negra seen by your veterinarian. They may recommend antibiotics or a medicated shampoo to resolve the infection. They can also work with you to determine the underlying cause so you can prevent it in the future.
