Is 400mg Trazodone too high for my 45lb dog's nail trim anxiety?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 45 lbs

I have a 40-45 pound dog that does not like to get nails done. She can get nippy and not easy to hold. I too her to a low income vet clinic, they couldn't do her. They sent me home with Trazodone. They want me to give her 4 - 100 mg (400 mg) an hour before I bring her back. I googled it and it seems to be an awfully high dosage,is this safe to give all at 1 time

If your dog has never had this drug before I recommend giving one and then gradually giving more until the desired effect is reached. For example if you give one and there is no effect after 30 to 45 minutes then give another pill. You can repeat this up to 400 mg. Is easier to get more if your dog does not get sedated versus if they get over sedated from a high dose. 400 mg is a safe dose but starting low with increasing is also an acceptable route.
