My Shih Tzu's seasonal itching and hot spots aren't improving. Help!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 12 lbs

I have a 3 year old shih tzu with dermatitis. He only has bad itching and hot spots during the spring/summer. This year it is worse than others. I use an oatmeal shampoo & keep his hair short. I have tried otc hot spot sprays, but his itching does not seem to be getting any better

I am so sorry to hear of Jax's irritation. Seasonal allergies are unbearable sometimes. If the use of soothing shampoos and OTC products are not effective I would recommend that you have Jax evaluated by your regular veterinarian. He may benefit from a course of antihistamines to help settle the irritation. Your vet may have a prescription shampoo that will provide some relief as well. Consider having some bloodwork done to test for allergies as well-environmental allergies (pollens, grasses etc) can respond very well to allergy injection therapy and this might be something that would offer longer term relief for Jax.
