Why is my kitten aggressive and hissing after her first vet shots?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 7 months and 5 days old | 6 lbs

I took my cat today for the first time to get all her shots. Now that we are back home she is aggressive to me and my boyfriend. I tried to pick her up and she growled and hissed at me. This is not normal behavior for her. She is usually a very loving kitten. Is this normal?

It can be normal for a kitten to act like this, or it could be an indication of something more serious going on. Tart may just be sore from the vaccines and her only way of showing this to you is growling. If that is the case, she should be more normal by tomorrow. It is normal for kittens to be tired for 1-2 days after vaccines. If she seems painful or starts to vomit or have any swelling I would be concerned that she may be having a vaccine reaction that needs to be treated. Some cats will also be upset after taking a car trip, as this is not generally a normal occurrence for them and she may be car sick and feeling grumpy from that. She also may be upset form the whole experience of having to go into the vet. If your vets office is still open, I would call to see if they recommend having her come back in to be rechecked for a vaccine reaction or not. If they are closed and she continues to act abnormally, I would take her in to an emergency clinic to be checked out just to be on the safe side.
