My dog is limping and won't put weight on his hind leg. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 75 lbs

My dog has been not putting any weight on his hind leg since last night. Not sure what happened. He won't even put it on the ground, he lets me touch all his leg but when I get to right above the paw he tries to bite me. Tried feeling for a break but like I said he tries to bite me when I touch his paw. I don't see a cut or anything in the paw.

If Milo is this painful it could be something going on with the bone itself, but it could also be a soft tissue injury like a muscle strain as well as sometimes even bug bites can cause this type of reaction. Depending on which leg it is we can see ligament tears in the knee commonly in middle-aged large breed dogs. You can try restricting his activity to short leash walks only and in a kennel at night and seeing if that helps his limping. However if he has any swelling, the pain continues, or he seems weak that he needs to be checked out by a veterinarian. Do not give him any human pain medication as it could be very toxic to dogs.
