I have had 2 outdoor cats die in the past 2 days. Heavy breathing , won't eat or drink can barely walk. We thought maybe they got into poison or fertilizer as we live in the country

Oh no, I'm so sorry that both of your cats have died recently! You are correct that they could have gotten into something toxic causing their symptoms, but unfortunately without seeing them in person, I can't say what that toxin might be. You could take their bodies into a vet for a necropsy (an autopsy for cats) which may give you some answers. If it's too late to take them in because you've already buried them, then I recommend looking out for similar symptoms in any other cats you may have at home. Should you see those symptoms again, rush them into a vet immediately for treatment. Again, I'm so sorry for your loss :-(

I would be very concerned about a toxin. If there's any chance of antifreeze exposure that would be my number one concern. Another possibility is rat bait/poison. Unfortunately most toxins are unable to be specifically tested for and treatment is usually supportive, meaning there is no specific antidote. If there's anyway to post mortem exam by a veterinarian done on either cat that may help you figure out what is going on. Sometimes the changes in the body can tell us what type of toxin is going on and then how to prevent future toxins. If you have any other cats around I recommend you keep them in closer to your property or even indoors for the next few days if it all possible.
