What does yellow, slightly runny poop mean for my 6-week-old puppy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 1 month old

What does it mean when my six week old puppy poops yellowish and it's runny, not that runny, you can still scoop it up?

It may just be due to something he ate if it's only been once or twice. But, some parasites such as coccidia or giardia may cause yellowed runny stool. I would recommend having a veterinarian check a stool sample for parasites if they are having multiple runny stools.

Yellowish, runny stool in a puppy this age can be caused by a number of different things. The most common possibility would be intestinal parasites such as roundworms, hookworms, or coccidia - your vet can examine a fecal sample under the microscope to help diagnose these parasites and prescribe appropriate medication to treat them. It's also possible that your puppy has an upset stomach due to something he ate, a recent diet change, or some type of intestinal infection. If your pup is acting normal otherwise (eating and drinking fine, active, no vomiting, etc.) you can try feeding a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice for the next day or two to see if this helps the stool return to normal - often, this works very well for a mild upset stomach. If there is no improvement by Monday, you will need to see your vet for testing to help determine what is causing the runny stool and get your pup started on appropriate medication to treat it.
