How to potty train my 1-year-old Dachshund who still poops inside?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Male | unneutered | 11 months and 11 days old | 11 lbs

Hi. I have a miniature long hair Dachshund , he's nearly 1 year old , I have a problem trying to potty train him , I've started training him as soon as I got him last year. When I take him outside, he urinates but does not always deficate. Most of the time he does his business (1&2) inside the house , on the carpets, couches , beds etc. He hasn't been neutered, because I'm planning on him having puppies in a year or two. I don't what to do. Neutering is a last resort for me. Can anyone help.

Reinforce crate training (again if necessary). The crate should only be big enough for Cuba to stand, turn around and lay down. Dogs and puppies thrive on routine, so begin a consistent schedule for going outside. He goes out FIRST thing in the morning. Pick a spot outside and wait. No walks until he goes. Praise and reward him when he goes. Place him back in the crate or on a leash attached to your hip so you can watch for his cues to go. This can be circling, sniffing around or whining. He should not have the run of the house or be left unsupervised until he is eliminating outside in the designated area. Take up the water 2 hours before bedtime and take him out right before bedtime. Be patient. Be consistent.
