My dog is in heat. Can I spay her now? Will she bleed once fixed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 9 months and 6 days old

Hi! We just adopted a new family member and named her Cali! She's amazing and now that we have three dogs, it's like having a miniature pack. One issue is though, she's not fixed and started her heat cycle last week. Our two boy dogs are both fixed. My question is, when will she be out of heat, so we can get her spayed? And will she still "bleed" after she is fixed? it's very messy. And our two boy dogs go nuts!

She could bleed for several days up to three weeks in some cases. You don't have to wait for her to come out of heat to be spayed. I do these procedures during heat all the time, especially if there is concern about the bleeding or about the dog getting bred. Once she is spayed, she will no longer cycle and will not bleed.
