Why is my senior dog peeing indoors after a new baby arrived?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 8 years and 9 months old | 70 lbs

Hi, I have a german shepherd who is nearly 9 and we recently had a new baby in December. Since the baby was born she has been urinating in the house and laying in it to hide it. We never had any previous problems from her before. Is it likely the baby causing it or will that just be coincindence and if so, is there anything we can do to help her?

If you're finding urine under her when she is sleeping or resting, Phoenix may have urinary incontinence. With incontinence they actually involuntarily leak urine when their body is relaxed, so they don't even realize it is happening. If this is the case case there are very helpful medications to manage this. if she is posturing/squatting to urinate in the house then this could be a sign of a urinary tract infection or even bladder stones. I would have her evaluated by a vet to rule out and treat any of these medical causes for urinating in the house. If they do not feel it is incontinence or an infection then we can address the issue from more of a behavioral angle. Hope this helps!
