My senior dog is stressed, panting, and coughing. How can I help?

Regarding our 17 year old American Cocker Spaniel (Sophie) Rebecca sent a reply to our first question about blindness, We seem to be having a unique problem with her. This is the second day Sophie has been quite stressed. She is panting constantly, and has developed a cough. We can get her to settle down for a few minutes at a time by laying next to her and petting her, but as soon as we stop, the panting begins again. What can we do? My wife and I are both in our late seventies. Pet's info: Dog | American Cocker Spaniel | Female | spayed | 17 years and 1 month old | 26 lbs

Hi! Poor girl! I'm sorry to hear about this. If she is stressed and panting, and unable to settle, there must be something significantly wrong. You are doing a great job trying to calm her down, but I really think she needs more help. Can you get her to a clinic today, to be checked over? There is likely a reason for her anxiety, and your vet can help to diagnose her, any maybe give her some medications to calm her down. I really hope she feels better soon!
