My senior dog is stressed, panting, and coughing. How can I help?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Cocker Spaniel | Female | spayed | 17 years and 1 month old | 26 lbs

Regarding our 17 year old American Cocker Spaniel (Sophie) Rebecca sent a reply to our first question about blindness, We seem to be having a unique problem with her. This is the second day Sophie has been quite stressed. She is panting constantly, and has developed a cough. We can get her to settle down for a few minutes at a time by laying next to her and petting her, but as soon as we stop, the panting begins again. What can we do? My wife and I are both in our late seventies

Hi! Poor girl! I'm sorry to hear about this. If she is stressed and panting, and unable to settle, there must be something significantly wrong. You are doing a great job trying to calm her down, but I really think she needs more help. Can you get her to a clinic today, to be checked over? There is likely a reason for her anxiety, and your vet can help to diagnose her, any maybe give her some medications to calm her down. I really hope she feels better soon!
