My dog's toenail broke into the quick. How can I safely remove it?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Boxer | Male | neutered | 4 years and 2 months old | 90 lbs

My adult boxers toenail has broken into the quick and looks like its hanging on by a thread. He did this while digging in the backyard yesterday, i let him have free range of the yard last night hoping he would let it fall off, to no avail. What can I do to ease his pain and detach the nail?

Ouch, poor Bhai! Unfortunately there is no OTC pain relievers you can give him, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. If he will let you, you can try to cut the nail off yourself, but it may be too painful for him and he may have to be sedated in order for it to be removed safely. Should he not let you do it, I would take Bhai into the vet today to have him sedated and have the nail removed. I would not let him try to get it off himself, as it may easily become infected. The vet can safely removed it for him.

Generally these will fall by themselves, keep it clean in salted water to prevent infection. Rarely sedation and surgical removal is required but if he will allow you and there is only a small sliver of soft tissue holding it then twisting it may provide enough tension for it to fall. Be aware this may be uncomfortable for him and if so do not proceed but seek professional help
