My dog chews paws & has tear stains. Are they food or environmental allergies?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Female | spayed | 4 years and 11 months old | 17 lbs

I forgot to mention my dog also chews her paws and has very minimal tear staining. Is this food or environmental allergies or both? Thanks!

Tear stains are a very common problem and usually do not indicated any type of underlying problem. It is mostly a cosmetic issues and is not harmful to your pet. Chewing feet excessively can however be a symptom of an allergy, usually an environmental allergy and can oftentimes be controlled with cleaning the feet 2-3 times a day (to remove pollens and other irritants) and sometimes may need medication to help keep the itch under control.
