Is Dramamine safe for my dog's travel anxiety and car sickness?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 4 months and 18 days old | 18 lbs

My Buddy goes through severe anxiety when traveling. He drools non-stop, he is nauseous, he vomits, he cries. His vet recomended benadryl, serrenia, all which were unsucessful. I also tried Happy Traveler caplets and it was a failer. Lastly his vet recommended Dramamine 25 mg which I've tried since Monday and boy what a dramatic change. My Buddy is calm but very alert, no drooling, no nauseous, no vomits, no barking. He is even able to munch on treats and drink water. Will this affect him badly?

No, the Dramamine shouldn't affect him badly at all - this medication is an antihistamine that is considered to be very safe in dogs, and I have personally never seen any problems with using it. If it works well for him, great! There should be no problem with using it when you need to :)

Dramamine is an antihistamine that is very benign and is often prescribed in dogs with car sickness. If you're giving it once daily it shouldn't be an issue, however if you're concerned about overuse you can talk with your vet to see if any other options would be beneficial.
