My rabbit won't eat hay anymore. Is her current diet the problem?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 22 days old

Bella doesnt eat her hay anymore. I give her 1 carrot, half a cup of pellets, and her body size of hay, just like always. My other rabbit still eats his. Should I be concerned?

Timothy hay or similar grasses should make up a majority of her diet. She can eat as much as she wants. The high fiber is essential to gut health and motility. Decrease her pellets to 1/8 cup daily and decrease the carrot portion as well. She can have it after she eats hay.

Do not worry if she won't eat pellets. A majority of her diet should be timothy hay or similar grasses. She can eat as much timothy, grass or oat hays as she wants. Avoid alfalfa. Commercial pellets can be offered. Limit the amount to 1/4 cup per 6 pounds body weight daily. Vegetables can be offered at 2 cups per 6 pounds body weight. Avoid celery and iceberg lettuce as these contain little nutrition. Fruit should be given sparingly to prevent diarrhea.
