Why does my cat have bleeding sores and losing fur on his back?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 3 years old | 8 lbs

My cat keeps getting soars on his back. About the size of a dime. They break open, bleed and pus. All the fur around it falls out. I'm assuming from his excessive licking in those spots? He has now had 3 in the past 3 weeks. What could these be?

It is difficult to tell from a photo but these look like draining wounds, like possibly an abscess that had opened. The most common cause for this would be a bite from another animal. You don't mention if your cat goes outdoors but if he does that would be my first suspicion. From the limited amount I can see here I would recommend a vet visit because he may need to have these flushed and be placed on an antibiotic.
