My Shih Tzu ate chocolate. Is it toxic? What symptoms to watch for?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 23 lbs

My shih tzu ate about 3/4 of a fun size 3 musketeer bar. He turner 1 on January 21 and weighs between 20-25 lbs. What do I need to do? What should I look for? I hear chocolate is toxic to dogs.

You are correct, chocolate is toxic to dogs. However, milk chocolate in small amounts isn't too bad. He should be fine. There are many other ingredients in the bar besides chocolate and he ate a small amount. Monitor for signs of pancreatitis - vomiting, diarrhea, belly pain, not eating. If you see any of these, or if you have even a small concern, have him seen by a veterinarian near you right away.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your dog. The risk of chocolate toxicity should be passed by now. He could still be at risk for pancreatitis, but this is less likely if the vomiting and diarrhea have stopped. I would continue to monitor him closely though and seek veterinary care if the vomiting or diarrhea recurs. Hopefully he is past the worst of it though. I hope this information helps!
