My cat has a swollen, red lip and nose. Is it an allergy or ulcer?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 8 months and 28 days old | 8.5 lbs

I noticed her lip seemed swollen about the same time our A/C was broken. I'd changed the air filter (She possibly chewed on it before it got thrown out) and opened s window (My cats are strictly indoors) After noticing, I threw out the single plastic dish we used (all others are metal and ceramic) In the days that followed, lips and nose have been reddish and swollen. Nose is also snotty. Is this a rodent ulcer? Another type of allergy? Reaction from possibly chewing air filter?

This does look suspicious for a rodent ulcer, although a biopsy is necessary for a definitive diagnosis. Trauma is still possible (from chewing on the air filter). I would recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian- in person the lesions may look suspicious enough to start treatment for a rodent ulcer, or a biopsy may be recommended.
