My dog breathes fast after spay surgery when sleeping. Is it normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 8 pound shih-tzu recently got spayed. She breathes extremely rapid and hard when she is sleeping. I'm not sure if its from pain because she is on pain pills and has antibiotics as well. She is extremely tired and just wants to lay right on top of me. She doesn't breathe like this when she is awake. I don't know what is wrong and if I should take her to a vet.

If it was pain i would expect he to breath the same way or even worse when she is awake, if you are worried take her to your vet to have the surgical wound check and make sure she is not running a fever.
