Why are my dog's scaly skin bumps not getting better after treatment?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | 2 years and 3 months old | 53 lbs

My dog has several scaly bumps, mainly on his back. The vet traiged him with anti-bacterial and anti-fungal shampoo, a flea pill, prednisone and an anti-itch pill (starts with an "h"). That was two weeks ago and the bumps have not left or improved. I even fumigated my house, washed all bedding and treated the backyard. What could be the problem? The vet never did a scratch/skin test...said it may not even show the problem.

Skin lesions can be caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, immune system disorders, or a combination of the above. I recommend making an appointment to have Jerome seen by your veterinarian again to help determine the cause of bumps you’ve noticed and to make sure they are treated appropriately. Since they have not responded to treatment so far, your vet will likely want to look at a sample from the area under the microscope to determine if there is an infection and to figure out what medication is appropriate for treatment. In some cases a skin scraping like you mentioned is needed, in others a fungal culture to look for ringworm or other fungus or a skin swab to look for bacteria can help find the cause. If these tests do not provide answers, consider asking for a referral to a veterinary dermatologist to get to the bottom of what is happening.
