Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 6 years and 4 months old | 10 lbs
Can cats be allergic to dog dander? If so, what can I do to relieve my cat's scratching and licking/barbering? Only thing recommended was 1/4 pill of 25mg Benadryl. Can't afford to take her to a vet for a cortisone injection. Also, can ear scratching be due to wax accumulation? She doesn't appear to have ear mites or fleas. Wearing Seresto collar for over a month now. Thank you so much for any advice.

Just like people, cats in theory could be allergic to just about anything. The most common allergies we know about are related to food, fleas, and the environment. If you can not afford to get her to the vet, she is already on flea prevention, and using a new prescription diet is out of the question, I would have to agree with your current veterinarian. Benadryl will unfortunately not be effective if there is a food allergy and you continue to feed this diet though. Food allergies can occur after long periods of time eating the same food without issues, this is not uncommon. In terms of wax accumulation, the discomfort associated with this could possibly lead to scratching but not a direct result of the wax. You can certainly try to clean out the way with gauze or q-tips to see if this helps. You can also treat for ear mites just in case she does have some, as this is easy enough to do.
