Our cat is very old and is blind in one eye. Recently we have noticed a lump/abscess on the eye he's blind in. It doesn't seem to bother him but looks unpleasant.

This is common with blind eyes that have not been removed, this is why we always recommend an e-nucleation on a blind eye of this sort. you will need to bring him to the vet to get it checked, then schedule a surgery ASAP in order to have the eye removed.

The eye is getting infected. Even if not functional anymore, the eye must be treated with antibiotics (usually eye drops) and if the infection is persistent, enucleation must be considered and discussed. Please do not hesitate to contact us again on the forum or by requesting a consultation if you have any more questions or to discuss it any further.
