I am sorry to hear about Dakota. It is possible if she is an older dog not used to running should could have pain and discomfort from the overexertion either in her muscles or if she has some mild arthritis she could have aggravated that. If she is limping on a certain limb, we would also worry about soft tissue trauma (ligament, tendon, muscle) strain in that leg. Unfortunately there isn't a safe over the counter pain medication in pets. I would call your vet and let them know what is going on. They may want to examine her or may be able to prescribe a day or two of pain medication if she has been recently seen by them.

Dakota is beautiful! Whining when walking and climbing stairs is a sign of discomfort and can be caused by many things. Given her age and breed it is possible she has arthritis in her hips or spine. Of course it is possible that she has another musculoskeletal condition such as a knee injury or soft tissue strain or sprain. I would have her seen by your veterinarian so the pain can be isolated and so appropriate pain medication can be prescribed. Over the counter human pain medications are not safe for dogs. Keeping dogs at a lean weight can help strain on joints. Also, fish oil supplements are great for overall joint health as well.
