Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 23 days old | 20 lbs
Hey there! Not an emergency or crazy concern, but I am curious to when the best time to get Lancelot fixed is? Since we have a male husky, and I heard female Siberian Husky's can start to get aggressive after a certain age that getting it her fixed at 6 months is an ideal age? Will fixing her put her at risk of anything? Are there any benefits to getting her fixed? (at a specific age or not) Will she have a cycle beforehand or should iry to get her fixed before she has one?

Great question! Typically for female dogs I like to recommend having them spayed prior to their first heat cycle which will usually occur sometime around 6 months of age. The reason for this is that spaying them before this will dramatically lower their incidence of mammary tumors when they are older. Studies have shown that every heat cycle that passes prior to doing the spay significantly increases these chances. I don't have to study in front of me but I believe it suggests that after 3 heat Cycles spaying your dog at that point is essential is essentially not going to make any difference statstatistically in terms of the incidence of mammary cancer. You were talking about a male dog that is a large breed like a husky I would recommend waiting until at least a year and probably even 18 months. This is because they're testosterone helps with bone growth and the prevention of orthopedic injuries as they get older. Unfortunately in both male and female dogs that are altered they are at a much greater chance of becoming obese. With that said it will be your responsibility as a pet owner to make sure Lancelot is kept on a very healthy diet. Good luck!
