Any type of respiratory sickness in a young animal like Tipou, who is not likely to be fully vaccinated, should be viewed with significant concern. This is particularly true if the cough seems to be chronic, hacking, or producing mucus. One thing you might be able to do at home, depending on how wiggly he is, is try to get a temperature. Determining if he has a fever would be a reasonable first step in seeing if a bacterial or viral infection is brewing. Any reading above 102.5 is generally considered above normal. The absence of a fever however does not rule out an infection. You should also take into account any other clinical signs that you may be seeing. These might include a decreas in energy level, nasal or ocular discharge, sneezing, respiratory distress, and any gastrointestinal signs. The safe bet would be to see your local veterinarian so that he or she can determine if a course of medication is the prudent course of action. Depending on the nature of the cough, your vet may also be interested in running other diagnostic tests such as blood work or x-rays.
