Why is my dog's hair thinning on her belly and legs, not irritated?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 40 lbs

My dog is loosing her hair. I thought she was just shedding her winter coat but now her whole underbelly and back of her legs is very thin. I can see her skin but it doesn't look irritated. She is not overly itchy and her back seems fine. Any ideas?

Hair loss can be a sign of parasites like Demodex mites, allergies, or certain endocrine (hormonal) or autoimmune diseases. I would recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian to have Wednesday examined. They may want to do a skin scrape test to look for Demodex mites, or may recommend running lab work to rule out endocrine disease.
