My new cats are hiding. How can I help them adjust in a small home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 10 months old

I cannot get either cat from there hiding spot to put them in a small room as suggested without scaring them. Also my apt is small there's really no rooms to shut them into. Its a small one bedroom only one door separating bed/ bathroom and living-room kitchen. One is in one side the other cat is on the other side. Is this sufficient? I'm the only person and no other animals just the brother and sister. I'm scared they won't adjust. I'm calm, food water cat box is out.

Thank you for more information on your apartment and Escher and Cringer! Yes, it's fine where they are. You only just got them, and it will take time for them to adjust. All cats are scared when they get into a new home, and they react by hiding. As they get used to their new home, they will come out more and more. You are doing a great job by being calm, and keep some cat treats with you at all times. That way, you can reward them when they come out or approach you. I would ignore them unless they come to you. Getting in their face and trying to get them out will only make them more anxious and scared. Keep your bedroom door open at night, and you may find the cats will soon be joining you to sleep on the bed. Patience is key, they will adjust :-)
