My dog still has hives & swollen muzzle after Benadryl, what to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 4 years and 5 months old | 60 lbs

My dog had an allergic reaction to something. Not quite sure what it was. I admistered 2 benadryl as she has had 1 allergic reaction before to a bee sting. Has hives and swollen muzzle but no change in breathing. It's has been about 2 hours now and still has hives and swollen muzzle. What should I do?

This is probably an allergic reaction due to an insect bite or a plant outside. those reactions tend to resolve within 48 hours without treatment. if the swelling becomes too large or if your dog is lethargic, take her to the vet in order to get an antihistamine or steroid injection.

It can take many hours for the swelling to resolve, and as long as she is not swollen in the neck region, and can breath ok, it is fine to wait it out. If she is swollen around her neck, having trouble breathing, or turning blue inside her mouth, it is a serious emergency.
