What can I do for my senior cat's dry stool and constipation?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 16yr old cat with CKD & presently on Orbox & Clavamox, eating very well, has dry, very dry stool. I give her Aloe liquid every night. What if anything can I do about the dry stool? Thank you

Consider talking to your vet about a stool softener, such as lactulose. This can help with dry, hard stool. Also, try increasing your cat's water intake by adding water to canned food or offering a water fountain.

I am sorry to hear about Julle. It is possible she is not getting enough water intake if her stools are very dry. If she is not already on a canned diet, I would consider switching her to canned food or a mixture of dry and canned. If she isn't a big drinker of water out of a water bowl consider purchasing a cat water fountain, which can encourage drinking. An over the counter hairball laxative such as laxatone can help with mild cases of constipation. If your kitty is still having dry stools or difficulty pooping after a few days or if she stops pooping, stops eating, or becomes lethargic then an exam at the vet is recommended. You can read more about constipation at http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=634 If she is having a difficult time getting in and out of the litterbox then an exam is warranted to evaluate her for arthritis. She may benefit from treatment for this, as well as using a litterbox with a lower entryway.
