New dog itchy from food allergies. How long for diet to work?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 17.5 lbs

I got a new dog on 2/16/17 and he was very itchy and sneezed a lot when I got him. I treated him for fleas and changed his food from Alpo to Premium Edge Lamb food for the past week. I took him to the vet two weeks ago and nothing unusual came up. He is still itchy, when will his food allergies go away? How long should I wait before I go back to the vet? My vet recommended Benadryl, which I'm still waiting for, via mail.

It sounds as though you are doing everything right! It can take 2-3 months for a diet change to take full effect in the case of food allergies. During that time, it may be helpful to consider prescription based anti-itch medications if the Benadryl proves ineffective. As your vet mentioned, Benadryl is certainly the first line of defense. If the Benadryl doesn't help his itching after a few days of use, give your vet a call for a recheck. Be sure to keep Harry on a high quality flea preventative, such as Nexgard, Bravecto, or Advantix on a monthly basis.
