Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 4 years old

My cat ate a protein bar that had dark chocolate on it, but he ate it last night while we were asleep. Do we need to take him to the vet immediately?

If it happened more than 6-8hrs ago and your cat doesn't have any worrying symptoms like restlessness, racing heart, nervousness, vomiting then you do not have to rush to your vet. It means that your cat is not in danger. You may see gastro-intestinal symptoms like vomiting and / or diarrhea. If they are mild then again you don't have to see your vet immediately. However, if your cat looks unwell you should get him checked by your vet.

Ideally you should try to find out what kind of chocolate was in the bar and what quantity of it, as different amounts and different types have different toxicity levels. there is a chocolate toxicity calculator here: http://www.petmd.com/dog/chocolate-toxicity This can help you figuring out if the quantity he ate is toxic or not. if you cat is not showing any abnormal signs, then he will probably be fine. if she shoes any of the symptoms: Vomiting Tremors in muscles Abnormal heart rhythms Elevated heart rate Hyperthermia Seizures Collapse Take him to the vet right away.
