Is it normal for a new puppy to not eat, drink, and be sleepy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Poodle | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 23 days old | 3 lbs

I got my poodle puppy last night. When we got home she ate some puppy food and drank water. Today she hasn't wanted to eat anything and hasn't drunk much water and is very sleepy and cuddly. I haven't had a puppy in a long time, not sure if this is normal.

Cutie! Congrats on your new puppy. Your pup is going through a lot of change, and it can be very common for them to eat less than usual the first couple days - all that change is stressful and a bit scary. Her appetite should pick up in the next day or two as she figures out her new life. Of course, if your perception is she seems lethargic or excessively tired, then a vet visit is in order to make sure she's not sick.
