My dog has recurring bladder stones. Can we avoid more surgeries?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 20 lbs

My 9 year old male dog has calcium oxylate bladder stones. He is getting ready to have his 3rd cystotomy. He is on the special Royal Canin SO food. We give him potassium twice a day. He has chronic cystitis. Are there any other options I have? I don’t want him to have to have a 3rd open surgery. No other procedures available in Arizona it seems. Does he have to keep having surgery? I worry every time he goes under anesthesia and not to mention the cost.

Poor Peanut! POnce foremd calcium oxalate cannot be dissolved and will require surgical removal to prevent obstruction and reduce pain. Prevention focuses on diluting the urine as far as possible so the crystals and stones are less likely to form - using a canned diet and adding as much water as he allows helps; ensure also no access to high calcium or oxalate treats (or access to cat food etc).
